Labour Conference 2024

On Sunday, 22nd 2024 September, the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians hosted our fringe event in Liverpool, at Labour Conference, asking what a Labour government should do, or is failing to do, to promote and protect Palestinian rights.

Our panellists spoke to a packed-out room, featuring MPs and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) leaders, to set out what we need to see from a Labour government which is truly committed to ending the genocide and protecting Palestinian rights.

Chaired by journalist Ali Milani, the panel featured:

  • Tayab Ali, Director of ICJP and Head of International Law at Bindmans LLP;
  • Sara Husseini, Director of British Palestinian Committee;
  • Yasmine Ahmed, UK Director of Human Rights Watch; and
  • Ehab Omar, Co-founder of British Palestinian Families.

Almost one-year into the genocide in Gaza, the panel took place against the backdrop of pending International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants applied for against Israel’s leaders, and numerous International Court of Justice (ICJ) rulings establishing, firstly, the illegality of Israel’s practices in its war on Gaza, and, secondly, the illegality of its occupation of Palestine.

The Labour government in its first months in office appears to have failed to keep pace with these developments: maintaining 90% of arms exports to Israel, continuing to provide diplomatic cover for Israel’s war efforts, and failing to respond forcefully to Israel’s increasingly escalatory regional attacks.
