Mohammed Wishah Al Jazeera Journalist

Israel’s systematic targeting of journalists is a fundamental part of its continued genocide in Gaza

London, 9th April 2026 — Last night, Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent Mohammed Wishah was killed in an Israeli drone strike near Gaza City, after a vehicle he was driving on a main road was directly targeted. His killing marks yet another devastating example of the systematic targeting of journalists in Palestine by Israeli forces.

Mohammed Wishah was a journalist working with Al Jazeera, one of the most prominent international news organisations reporting on the genocide in Gaza. He was targeted and killed whilst driving on al-Rashid Street to the West of Gaza City.

His death brings the number of Palestinian journalists killed since October 2023 to 262, an unprecedented toll that highlights the extreme dangers faced by those documenting the realities on the ground. It is the deadliest war for journalists in history. Nearly quadruple the amount of journalists have been killed in Gaza in the last two-and-a-half years compared to the entire six years of the Second World War.

Journalists play a vital role in bearing witness, especially to the war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza. The deliberate targeting of a clearly identifiable journalist, travelling on a public road, represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law and a direct assault on press freedom.

Conditions in Gaza City continue to deteriorate amid ongoing Israeli violations of the ceasefire, further endangering civilians and those attempting to report on the humanitarian crisis.

The continued failure of the international community to act decisively has enabled Israeli impunity. The UK government must urgently implement full sanctions on Israeli political and military leaders in meaningful manner to curtail ongoing violations of international law, and it must halt supply of arms licenses, given that Israel has previously reportedly used UK-made R902(W) Wankel engine to power drones that have been used in war crimes.

The killing of Mohammed Wishah demands an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation, and full accountability for those responsible. Without accountability, such violations will continue unabated.

ICJP stands in solidarity with journalists in Gaza who continue to risk their lives to report the truth.
