London, 10th July 2026 – The International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) condemns the killing of Mohamed Fawaz al-Wahidi, Director of Public Relations for the Egyptian Relief Committee in Gaza, who was murdered in an Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in Gaza City’s Sabra neighbourhood only minutes before Egypt’s FIFA World Cup match kicked off against Argentina.
Al-Wahidi was among four people killed in the strike, which included Hamza al-Deri, 10-years-old, his eight-year-old brother Fari al-Deri, and Ahmed Daghmush, 33-years-old, who was driving the taxi. Several other civilians were also injured.
The Egyptian Relief Committee is Egypt’s official humanitarian relief body operating in Gaza. It provides food assistance, shelters displaced families, and undertakes rubble clearance operations. The committee had also organised public screenings of Egypt’s World Cup matches, offering a moment of normality for Palestinians living under siege and genocide.
The strike is not an isolated incident. In January, five people, including three journalists working with the Egyptian Relief Committee, were killed in an Israeli drone strike while documenting the construction of a displacement camp near Netzarim. The latest attack is just another example that highlights Israel’s blatant disregard for international humanitarian law and the protection of humanitarian personnel and civilian relief operations.
Despite the so-called ‘ceasefire’, Israel has killed at least 1,084 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2025, with the past week seeing an uptick in brutal and indiscriminate Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip.
The scale of human suffering caused by Israel’s genocide in Gaza demands urgent international action. Extremely conservative estimates indicate that more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, while humanitarian organisations estimate that tens of thousands more remain missing or buried beneath the rubble.
The genocide has also devastated Palestinian sporting life, with the Palestinian Football Association reporting that at least 567 footballers have been killed, including Palestinian goalkeeper Saleem Khader Al-Ashqar who was killed last week outside of Khan Younis by Israel.
ICJP reiterates its call for the immediate, independent investigation and prosecution of all alleged violations of international humanitarian law committed by Israel in Gaza.
The repeated killing of humanitarian workers, children, and other civilians is a stark indictment of the continued failure to uphold international law and demands urgent accountability for those responsible, alongside immediate measures to protect civilians and those risking their lives to deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance.
