Cardiff, 29 September 2026 – Yesterday, the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) was in Cardiff to brief Welsh Senedd members on international human rights law and Wales’s legal obligations regarding Palestine.
ICJP’s director, Tayab Ali, briefed Members of the Senedd (MSs) on international law, Wales’s obligations regarding Palestine, and what the Welsh Government must do to ensure a ‘globally responsible Wales’s in line with its Well Being of Future Generations Act (2015).
MSs present, which included Welsh Deputy First Minister Sioned Williams, also heard about what the government can do in a devolved capacity to ensure Wales is not complicit in international human rights violations committed by Israel in Palestine, including in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.
This is especially pertinent given arms companies in Wales are still producing military components for use by Israel in Gaza.
The day’s events were in collaboration with Palestine Solidarity Campaign Cymru and concluded with a packed-out public talk delivered by Tayab in Cardiff’s Temple of Peace.
In August, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwarth recognised Israel’s actions in Gaza as a genocide, and this month welcomed the sanctions announced by the UK government on illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
On 3 September 2026, Adam Price MS, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, announced an “Ethical Framework for Welsh Government Engagement with the Defence Sector. While consultations are ongoing until the autumn, it is crucial that this framework includes a robust mechanism for human rights due diligence checks, especially where weapons manufacturers are involved.
As the largest party in the Senedd, the Plaid Cymru government now has a clear and strong opportunity to ensure that Welsh public money, procurement, and industry is not complicit in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians.
ICJP looks forward to further engagement with Welsh Senedd members, the government, and Welsh civil society, as the work towards a globally responsible Wales and ethical framework for Welsh politics and procurement continues.
